Checkered Steel Plate — Base Thickness Is What Carries the Load

Tear drop, diamond and 5-bar anti-slip plate in carbon steel, galvanized, stainless and aluminium —

hot rolled with mill scale, pickled and oiled or galvanized, cut to your sheet size.

Two numbers describe every checkered plate, and buyers mix them up. Base thickness is the steel

that carries the load. Pattern height is the raised bar rolled into the top face. A plate quoted as

6 mm "overall" on a 5 mm base is a 5 mm plate as far as strength is concerned — the bar adds

grip, not capacity. If the two figures are not stated separately on both the quotation and the mill

certificate, you do not know what you are buying, and the problem surfaces at your fabricator

instead of at your supplier. We state both, every order.

The pattern is rolled into the plate at the mill, so it cannot peel, flake or wear through the way

an applied anti-slip coating or tape does — it is the same steel, formed. Pattern choice follows

the traffic: tear drop for general flooring and vehicle decks, five-bar for heavy industrial traffic,

ramps and truck beds, diamond as the general-purpose option. One point on weight: published

theoretical weight tables are calculated from base thickness and do not capture the added

pattern, so delivered weight runs above the table figure. We quote and document both,

so your landed cost and your structural calculation are each built on real numbers.
